CHAPTER SIX

MATHIAS spent the next half an hour going over his clients's request. As he discussed the situation with them, he waited for a familiar footstep, waited to hear an impetuous knock, followed by that husky, full- bodied laugh.

What was it about Jacq that stirred such anticipation—that made him long to see a mop of gold-streaked curls poke around the open door and her mischievous, angled face fill up with a smile?

"Well, can you do it?" Patsie demanded in her typically forthright manner.

Mathias willed himself to concentrate on the task at hand. "You need to narrow the focus of your request some more," he replied. Although this particular procurement wasn't in the least complicated, he took his time so Jacq would have an opportunity to join them. He knew she'd be disappointed if she missed out. "Make a list of what you want and put it in the order of most important to least."

"I'll write everything down," Dana offered, tucking a lock of seal-brown hair behind her ear.

Just then Jacq breezed into the room. "Sorry I'm late," she said, offering the smile he'd spent the past half hour envisioning. "What have I missed?"

She still wore his ring, Mathias noted, and a fierce satisfaction seized hold.

"This is my fiancee, Jacq Randell." He made the introductions. "She'll be working with me on your request. Jacq, this is Dana Ramsey and Patsie Tolson. They're both fourteen and best friends. They're also about to become sisters."

Jacq held out her hand to each in turn, never revealing by so much as a flicker of an eyelash that she found the two a surprise. "It's a pleasure to meet you. What can I do to help?" she asked, taking the chair next to his.

"We want to give our parents a honeymoon," Patsie said. "And we're making a list of possibilities. We'd love to send them to Hawaii or Alaska, but we've only saved two hundred and twelve dollars. So we'll have to settle for whatever we can buy with that."

Dana finished making a notation on her pad and glanced up with a frown.

"We would have saved more, but we didn't find out in time."

Catching Jacq's look of confusion, Mathias explained, "Dana's mother and Patsie's father are getting married. The girls were told that a honeymoon was out of the question because of work complications."

"What a crock that turned out to be!" Patsie snorted, her bright red hair falling forward to graze a freckled cheek.

"Hey, you believed it, same as me," Dana said. "If we hadn't overheard them talking last week, we'd never have learned the truth."

"What truth is that?" Jacq asked, glancing from one to the other.

"Instead of having a honeymoon, they're putting the money toward our college tuition." Patsie jumped to her feet and began pacing. "The minute we discovered that, we both took after-school jobs so we could give them a honeymoon as a joint Christmas and wedding present."

"I just wish we'd known sooner so we could have saved more," said Dana.

She peeked at Mathias from beneath her lashes.
